Agri-tech R&D for the Eastern Province

This is the agriculture research and development behind AgriX, run for the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka from our Kalmunai base. Everything here is honestly labelled research or a pilot — not a finished product — so farmers and partners know exactly what is proven and what we are still working out.

What we are working on

Each track is labelled so there is no confusion between what is proven and what is still being figured out.

  • Pilot

    Tank water-level IoT

Low-cost sensors that report village-tank and reservoir levels to a phone, so farmers can plan a rain-fed or tank-fed season against the water they actually have.

  • Pilot

    Paddy field water-depth sensing

Measuring the water depth inside paddy fields so irrigation follows the real state of each field, which matters most under the major-irrigation schedules in the Ampara District.

  • Research

    Elephant intrusion early warning

Early detection and alerting for wild-elephant movement near fields, a serious crop-damage problem in the Batticaloa District. This is early-stage research, not a product we sell.

  • Research

    Low-cost soil moisture for smallholders

Soil-moisture sensing cheap and rugged enough for smallholder plots, so watering decisions are based on the soil rather than habit, without enterprise-scale cost.

  • Research

Tamil and Sinhala farmer app UX

How a farm control app should read and behave for Tamil- and Sinhala-speaking farmers, so the technology fits the people who use it rather than the other way around.

  • Pilot

Offline-first LoRa and GSM data links

Getting sensor data off fields with weak or no mobile coverage using long-range LoRa and GSM, so a controller keeps running and reporting where ordinary connectivity fails.

Run a pilot on real land

Research only matters when it meets real fields. We invite organisations across the Eastern Province to run pilots with us — bringing the land and the local knowledge, while we bring the sensors, controllers and software. We report honestly on what works and what does not.

Questions

R&D FAQ

Is anything on this page a finished product?

No. Every track here is labelled research or a pilot. The shipped AgriX capabilities — automatic water systems, sensor monitoring and the mobile control app — are described on the AgriX pages. This page is what we are still researching.

What is the difference between research and a pilot here?

Research means we are investigating the problem and possible approaches. A pilot means we are testing a working version in real conditions. Neither is sold as a proven product until it has earned that.

Can my organisation run a pilot with you?

Yes. We invite farmer organisations, Agrarian Service Centres, NGOs and universities in the Eastern Province to run pilots with us. Tell us your crop, land and water source through the contact form.

Do you offer elephant intrusion alerts today?

Not as a product. Elephant intrusion early warning is an active research track because of the real crop-damage problem in the Batticaloa District. We will be clear about when it moves from research to a tested pilot.

Have land for a pilot?

If you are a farmer organisation, Agrarian Service Centre, NGO or university in the Eastern Province, tell us about your land and the problem you want solved.
